frequently asked questions
When can I collect my finished item?
We will email you as soon as they’re ready for pick up. Please allow at least at 2 weeks for firing as our kiln is working her very hardest to get all of your items fired. The firing process takes over 24 hours for the kiln to heat up to 1050 degrees celsius, and cool down to under 100 degrees before it is ready to be returned to you.
If you need your items sooner (travelling, or for a special gift) free to ask us. We can prioritise the firing to ensure you have your items in time!
I’ve never done ceramics before! Is this for me?
Absolutely! The pack is designed to guide you through the process start-to-finish. It includes a friendly how-to guide on how to start and get through building your very own weird and wonky shapes. If you’re feeling unsure, have a look at our workshops section if you’d like to have an intimate, in-person experience to get the hang of making instead!
Are the materials safe for using at home?
Glazes combine a few main ingredients such as silica, alumina and flux to achieve their shiny finish. The glazes in pansy pack are specially formulated for beginners use so they are water-based, non-toxic, lead-free, and food safe. However please always take care and precautions by avoiding contact with your skin, eyes or mouth.
How many objects can I make with 1.5kg of clay?
It depends what you are making and how thick/large they are! Generally speaking you’ll be able to make at least two large-ish sized mugs or one big vase, or multiple smaller objects.
Can I buy my own clay and fire it in your kiln?
Oh no! Please don’t mix any clay purchased outside of pansy into your creations or into the firing batch. The pansy pack clay has a specific firing temperature, any damages caused to the kiln and kiln shelves will be liable for repair costs. Please check with us beforehand if you’re unsure.
How do I get my delicate item all the way back to pansy?
As gently as possible! Gently wrap up your creations with as much padding (tea towels, bubble wrap, tissue paper) as possible and then in a basket or shoe box. During transit avoid any bumps, sudden movements, or your items bashing against any hard surfaces. Handles and any thin walls are extra vulnerable so give them some extra love and padding. It can be a rocky journey, be safe!
Does it have to be fired in a kiln? Can it just air dry instead?
It’s possible to allow your pieces to air dry and display them on your coffee table, but it is in it’s most fragile state so it’ll be damaged very easily with a small knock over, and is not waterproof at all! We would highly recommend at least bisque firing your pieces (which is already included in your kit cost, yay!)
Will my creations be food safe?
The creations will be food safe once glaze is applied and then fired. The glaze acts as a glassy finish that will cover, protect and seal your vessels. Any areas that are left unglazed will get a clear layer in our studio before firing, so everything ends up looking pretty cute and shiny!
