workshops
Where are the workshops held?
The workshops are held at pansy, you may have noticed we have a cosy studio dedicated especially to welcoming and hosting intimate, creative workshops. Our address is Czaar Peterstraat 68, Amsterdam. If you have any trouble finding it or have any questions about accessibility please feel free to contact us at hello@pansy-shop.com
Can I use a voucher for the workshop?
Of course! You can use the voucher code to book online, or if your voucher was purchased in-store, you can send us an email hello@pansy-shop.com and we can organise for it to be used towards your workshop.
Can I purchase a workshop for a friend?
Yes! What a nice gift! We offer gift cards through our website which can be used across pansy shop, workshops, and services.
What do I need to prepare for the workshop?
We’ll take care of everything, if you want to look at some inspiration in advance that always helps!
For clay-making workshops if you have long nails it can be handy to give them a little trim as they can get in the way sometimes.
Don’t wear your finest clothes - we’ll be getting messy with clay and glazes!
Excited to see you in the studio!
What language are the workshops taught in?
All of our workshops will be held in English to cater to our international friends! If you have trouble understanding English please let us know before booking so we can help organise translation.
Can I book for a group or team of people?
pansy is happy to provide you with exclusive team-building experiences, creative activities, and workshops for your business. We will travel onsite or host in our studio. Contact us with the amount of people, the activity you'd like to do, and when we can make this happen!
What if I can’t make the second session?
If you’re unable to attend the glazing session of your workshop then we can organise a glazing kit for you to paint your object at home. Otherwise we will do our very very best to schedule you into another glazing session *pending availability*
What do I need to bring to the workshop?
We can't wait to welcome you to our space. It's best to dress in some clothes you don't mind getting messy in, and come as your best beautiful self! We will email you if there are any specific things you'll need to bring along for the workshop.
Can my child join a workshop?
Sure, we’re happy to have kids during our ceramic painting sessions as long as they’re accompanied by you (or a guardian adult)
Alternatively we’re happy to organise private sessions (birthday parties for example) for children with a minimum of 7 participants - send us an email to start planning together!
What happens if I can't make it to my workshop?
If you can't make it to the workshop, please let us know as soon as possible. You can check our full cancellation policy here to see if you’re eligible for a refund!
Where can I park my car?
We recommend coming here by either by bike or public transport as parking can be tricky on the street. However there’s this Parkbee closeby you can book in advance!
pansy packs - painting
I’ve never done ceramics before! Is this for me?
The kit includes a friendly how-to guide on how to start and finish the painting/glazing process.
If you would like to build your own ceramic shapes, have a look at our workshops section which takes you through the entire process from start to finish!
Are the glazes safe for using at home?
Glazes combine a few main ingredients such as silica, alumina and flux to achieve their shiny finish. The glazes in pansy pack are specially formulated for beginners use so they are water-based, non-toxic, lead-free, and food-safe. However please always take care and precautions by avoiding contact with your skin, eyes or mouth.
Can I put it in the dishwasher?
Technically, yes the ceramic wares are food-safe and can be put in the dishwasher, but like all handmade and glass objects, it’s best to hand wash them for their longevity and keep the shiny finish!
How long does firing take?
Usually we're pretty quick with processing ceramic painting packs! Items can be done within 1 week, although with busier periods and holiday season it can take a little longer (up to two weeks). If you're in a hurry for a special occasion, just let our team know and we'll do our best to fire them in time!
I want to organise a ceramic painting party!
Amazing - that’s such a cute idea! You can fully customise your packs with our pansy pack builder! For bulk orders (25+ items) send us an email so we can arrange a better price for you.
I’ve got other questions!
Feel free to send us an email hello@pansy-shop.com
pansy packs - making
Does it have to be fired in a kiln? Can it just air dry instead?
It’s possible to allow your pieces to air dry and display them on your coffee table, but it is in its most fragile state so it’ll be damaged very easily with a small knockover, and is not water-proof at all! We would highly recommend at least bisque firing your pieces (which is already included in your kit cost, yay!)
Will my creations be food safe?
Yes! After you bring your ceramics to us, we'll dip everything in a clear glaze, which means the entire surface will turn into a shiny, glassy layer - which means you can safely eat, drink, and enjoy things from your own handmade ceramic creations!
Can I put it in the dishwasher?
Technically, yes the ceramic wares are food-safe and can be put in the dishwasher, but like all handmade and glass objects, it’s best to hand wash them for their longevity and keep the shiny finish!
How long does firing take?
It really varies depending on what item you have created. For larger, thicker objects - we tend to be extra cautious and will leave items for an extra week of drying. If there is any dampness or wetness in your objects before firing, there's possibility of them exploding inside the kiln. Generally we give a lead time of 2 - 3 weeks.
How many objects can I make with 1kg of clay?
It depends on what you are making and how thick/large they are! Generally speaking, you’ll be able to make at least two average-sized mugs or one big vase, or multiple smaller objects.
How do I get my delicate item all the way back to pansy?
As gently as possible! Gently wrap up your creations individually with as much padding (tea towels, bubble wrap, tissue paper) as possible and then in a basket or shoe box. Avoid stacking items on top of each other.
On your journey here: avoid any bumps, sudden movements, or your items bashing against any hard surfaces (like the bottom of a bike basket)
How does the firing work?
We’re re-designed our pansy packs so that the making and glazing can be done in one session, which means it only needs to be fired once in our kiln! It saves you a couple trips to pansy, as well as making the whole process more efficient. All the instructions about the process are included in the illustrated guide booklet inside of your pack.
general
Can I use your kiln to fire some ceramics I made?
Our kiln is super tiny! (only 50L) and with the amount of workshops and our own studio wok unfortunately we’re unable to take on external firings, so sorry! Feel free to check out kiln share for some firing options!
How did you start/set up/run your business?
I wrote some detailed information about setting up pansy here!
Do you work on commission projects?
It depends! I generally don’t do any kind of graphic design or logo jobs (but I have a great network of friends who will be able to help you, send me a message!)
If I have time in my schedule I love to work on custom ceramic commissions! The more time, the better! Please send through an email to hello@pansy-shop.com with a timeline, approximate budget, and what you’re after and we can chat more!
Can you recommend a bookkeeper?
Sure! We love working with Kees De Boekhouder (they specialise in creative freelancers) and I even did a cute little interview with them here!
Feel free to use this referral code 13039301 when joining, and we both get €100 off! Wahoo!
personal
Where are you from?
I was born and grew up in Boorloo (Perth, Western Australia). My parents are refugees from Vietnam, fleeing their country in the 1970s. My mum’s family found a new life in Maastricht, the Netherlands whilst my dad’s family found a home in Perth, Australia. I spent a lot of time between the two countries growing up, visiting my opa and oma in Tilburg almost every December holiday season. In the middle of 2018, it felt like the right time to make a move overseas; my partner and I spent almost two years doing residency programs and projects in Amsterdam, Lapua (Finland), Watou (Belgium), Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Jiali (Taiwan), and then finally putting our roots down here in Amsterdam (our favourite city!)
How did you find and get the space?
Pansy is located in the formerly design and concept store dewerkwinkel + meer which used to be run by graphic designer Lian. I met her in the spring of 2019 after returning from a fourth-month residency in Finland. I was looking for a gallery/retail space to share my work, and completely fell in love with the space. It’s one of those ‘right-time, right-place’ stories as Lian was saying goodbye to her shop. After a quite few months of planning, I was able to sign the lease and got the keys in March 2020.
In the midst of the pandemic I felt a big urge (and need) to grow into a bigger space that would offer a dedicated place for workshops, hosting bigger events for exhibitions, and more STORAGE. I looked around for areas with more foot-traffic in other neighbourhoods, but decided to stay in Czaar Peterstraat. I set up a meeting with our (very grumpy) makelaar, made a Big Girl Boss presentation, and signed the lease for an 80 square metre spot, which is our current home. With the help of my sweety friends, we spent two months fitting in new lighting, painting walls, building custom tables and furniture, and in March 2022 we re-opened our bigger brighter sunnier spot!
What does pansy mean?
Pansy is a type of garden flower! I wrote a little bit more about my feelings about pansies here.
Where do you find inspiration?
I love beautiful colour combinations (especially including pink), stationery, design, and art supply shops, well-designed spaces, patches of weeds and wildflowers, travelling to new cities, flea markets, food markets, outdoor markets, supermarkets, music videos, flower shops, talking through projects with my partner Bobo, growing plants, meeting other artists doing exciting things, art books, having deep, insightful, and great conversations, love stories, seeing my friends pursue and fulfil their dreams, and so much more!
What podcasts do you listen to?
I love listening to podcasts and finding out about new ones! Let me know if you have some good recommendations :) Currently on high rotation:

What were you doing before you started pansy?
I studied Fine Art & Design, my background is in printmaking & illustration and for 7 years in Australia I ran a cute shop/studio/workshop space (very much the roots of where pansy grows) with a team of kickass creative and funny women called Beau Est Mien. I also worked as an artist doing various projects, exhibitions, collaborations and events, you can find out more about my previous work here!
