⛺️ inner child (vol. 1) ⛺️ by @studioamsel
"When I think of my childhood in the 90s, I think of exploring real and imaginary worlds, making lots of things with my tiny hands and that feeling of being constantly amazed by everything around me. Being a child felt magical, and that magic has fueled my creativity throughout my 20s and well into my 30s in a million different ways.
For this (mini) exhibition — which is really just an excuse for us to gather around cake and sing happy birthday to our inner children — I wanted to capture snapshots of what life felt like before the Y2K scare. My childhood love of clay has reached full-circle, with ceramic pieces that will remind us all that at one point we turned on our big beige computers for the very first time, and that life outside technology was actually a pretty ordinary thing.
From my inner child to yours, this is a warm invitation to reconnect and celebrate, which have been two of my favorite things for as long as I can remember (the third are cats, and of course they'll be present!). It's also a first step towards something bigger that'll involve another huge part of being a child: friendships! But I'll tell you all about it right after you tell me the name of the scariest film you watched as a kid (mine is easy, Gremlins 2 during nap time)."
Maria (the aging millennial behind Studio Amsel) is an Amsterdam-based artist who used to be a curious, creative and a teeny bit witchy child and grew into an even more curious, creative and definitely witchy adult. Her love for animals (especially kitties!) and storytelling, combined with endless experiments fostered by her dad, have led her through a lifetime of art-making in the film industry, illustration, ceramics and much more.
